Wrong-size furniture accounts for nearly 30% of all furniture returns. This guide tells you exactly what dimensions to look for based on your height, room size, and use case.
Chair height is the most commonly misunderstood furniture dimension. Most people focus on style and miss the one number that determines daily comfort: seat height.
The ideal seat height puts your feet flat on the floor with your knees at a 90-degree angle. A rough rule: your seat height should be roughly 25-30% of your total height.
| Your Height | Ideal Seat Height | Total Chair Height |
|---|---|---|
| 150–160 cm | 40–43 cm | 75–85 cm |
| 160–170 cm | 43–45 cm | 80–90 cm |
| 170–180 cm | 45–48 cm | 85–95 cm |
| 180–190 cm | 48–51 cm | 90–100 cm |
| 190 cm+ | 51–54 cm | 95–105 cm |
Sofas fail for two reasons: they're too deep for shorter people, or they're too short for a room. Here's how to avoid both.
Standard sofa seat depth is 55–65 cm. If you're under 165 cm, look for sofas with seat depth under 58 cm — otherwise your feet won't reach the floor and your back won't reach the cushion at the same time.
| Room Width | Max Sofa Length | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Under 3m | 180 cm | Two-seater max |
| 3–4m | 220 cm | Standard three-seater |
| 4–5m | 270 cm | Large three-seater or corner |
| 5m+ | 300 cm+ | Corner sofa or sectional |

The gap between your seat height and table height should be 28–30 cm. This is called the "clearance" and it determines whether you can eat comfortably without hunching or reaching.
Bed length is rarely discussed but matters more than width for tall people. Standard beds are 200 cm long — if you're over 190 cm, look specifically for beds listed as 210 cm or 220 cm.
| Bed Size | Width | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Single | 90 cm | One person, small rooms |
| Double | 135 cm | One person with space, or couples in small rooms |
| Queen / EU Double | 160 cm | Most couples |
| King | 180 cm | Couples who need space |
| Super King | 200 cm | Maximum comfort |
Always check three numbers before buying any piece of furniture: total height, seat or surface height, and depth. Retailers list all three — but most shoppers only look at the first one.
Total height tells you how the piece looks in a room. Seat height tells you how it feels to use it. Depth tells you how much floor space it actually takes up. All three matter.
